Die Uhren der Päpste - Sammler-Uhren

The clocks of the popes

From the very beginning, Pope Leo XIV has demonstrated a closeness to the people – also in terms of style. His wristwatch is particularly striking: a sporty model that stands out clearly from the typical luxury watches worn by some dignitaries. Instead of relying on expensive brands like Rolex or Audemars Piguet, the new pope wears a functional timepiece.

According to media reports, the luxury watch is from the Swiss brand Wenger. The model is a classic diver's watch, according to several media outlets. It stands out with its black PVD case and red bezel – a color match for the Pope's robe. A simple accessory that nevertheless signals: This man wants to impress with action, not with status symbols.

The new Pope also remains down-to-earth in terms of price. Wenger watches are in the lower price segment, typically costing between 100 and 400 euros . The model worn by Leo XIV cost around 200 euros, but is now sold out.

However, some experts claim to have identified differences with the Wenger watch. The frame around the dial is incorrect, they say. Furthermore, the crown is black, not silver. They cite brands like Timex, Casio, or Victorinox.

In the past, the popes' watches were always closely scrutinized. It's almost become a tradition. Pope John Paul II was spotted several times wearing a Rolex worth more than €10,600. Pope Benedict XVI, on the other hand, preferred a rather bulky Erhard Junghans watch. Cost: €1,800
