History of the legendary Blancpain Fifty Fathoms French Navy diver's watch

The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is considered one of the most important early modern diving watches.

  • Origin: In the early 1950s, the French Navy was looking for a reliable watch for combat swimmers. Blancpain subsequently developed a robust diving watch, which was introduced in 1953.
  • Name: "Fifty fathoms" equals approximately 91 meters. This was the specified maximum diving depth of the early models, not automatically a guarantee for today’s examples.
  • Key features: These included a rotating bezel for measuring dive time, high legibility in the dark, water resistance, and an automatic movement. On early models, the bezel could usually only be turned in one direction, so that an accidentally adjusted dive timer would not indicate more remaining time.
  • Military history: The watch was used by various naval units. A well-known variant is the MIL-SPEC, which additionally featured a moisture indicator on the dial.
  • Significance: The Fifty Fathoms helped shape the concept of the modern diving watch. The Rolex Submariner and Omega Seamaster are also among the defining diving watches of that era; the question of which one was "the first" depends on which criteria and date one uses as a basis.
  • Today: Blancpain continues to offer the Fifty Fathoms in several versions, including classic automatic models and the smaller Bathyscaphe family.

With a vintage Fifty Fathoms, originality and condition are especially important. The dial, hands, bezel, and movement may have been replaced over the decades; expert inspection and traceable provenance are therefore crucial
