Princess Diana and her Cartier Tank
Share
As Princess Diana's marriage began to unravel, she stopped wearing the gold Patek Philippe watch Prince Charles had given her for her 20th birthday. Instead, she frequently wore a classic Cartier Tank Louis with an alligator strap, a gift from her father, Earl Edward John Spencer.
Although she owned numerous watches, Diana preferred the simple, classic watch that suited her growing spirit of independence.
The Cartier Tank Louis wasn't the only Tank watch Princess Diana owned. For more formal occasions, she wore a gold Cartier Tank Française, which her sons inherited after her death.
Harry later gave the watch to his wife, Meghan Markle, who also seems to attach special significance to the watch: She recently wore it in a rare portrait of the couple released ahead of their episode of Time100 Talks. But Meghan had already found this iconic design a powerful accessory:
She bought a two-tone Cartier Tank in 2015 as a gift to herself and as a symbol of her independence, and had "To MM From MM" engraved on the back. At the time, she said she hoped to pass it on to her own daughter one day.
