Thor Heyerdahl and the KonTiki from Eterna
Share
Thor Heyerdahl rose to world fame in 1947 when he embarked on the "Kon-Tiki" expedition (named after the Inca sun god), sailing 8,000 kilometers across the Pacific Ocean in a hand-built raft. The journey began in Peru and ended in the Tuamotu archipelago in Polynesia .
His raft was built according to the historical construction standards of the pre-Spanish Inquisition era in South America. With this bold experiment, he wanted to prove that the settlement of Polynesia was entirely possible not only by Asian but also by South American cultures. Thus, he demonstrated the ability to undertake long sea voyages and demonstrated the possibility of cultural exchange.
During the ocean crossing, Heyerdahl always wore an Eterna on his wrist. As a tribute to his legendary journey, the watch manufacturer renamed the model he wore the KonTiki.
