In 1912, he planned to travel to the USA as a second-class passenger with two friends. They also did not survive the accident. The watch will be auctioned on April 26 at the Henry Aldridge and Son auction house in Devizes, England. The seller is the family of the deceased.
"This piece appears in the official list of Hans' personal effects compiled by the authorities after the accident – and has been in the family ever since," explains auctioneer Andrew Aldridge.
"The clockworks froze to the minute as the cold waters of the North Atlantic swallowed not only its owner, but also the most famous passenger ship of all time - the Titanic," Aldridge told the BBC .
Givard's body was recovered after the sinking. He was buried in Halifax, Canada. In addition to the watch, a savings book, keys, some cash in a wallet, a compass, and a passport were also recovered.
All of his belongings were later returned to his brother in Denmark. Givard's story was later included in a book about the fates of Danish Titanic passengers. The clock, with visible signs of saltwater corrosion, was the centerpiece of an exhibition about the Scandinavian part of the Titanic story in Copenhagen in 2012.
