Abraham-Louis Breguet
Abraham-Louis Breguet, one of the world's most famous watchmakers, was born on January 10, 1747, in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. In terms of design, elegance, and innovation, he was perhaps the greatest watchmaker of all time. He is responsible for the development of the tourbillon, the perpetual calendar, the shock-resistant parachute suspension, the isochronous terminal curve, and many other improvements. Abraham-Louis Breguet died on September 17, 1823.
It's difficult to mention him in this section because identifying his often counterfeited works is difficult, and many of his pieces are unique. Suffice it to say that the vast majority of watches bearing his name were either distributed exclusively by his company or are simply counterfeits produced by others for export.
Precise identification requires extensive research. The first Souscription watch was sold in 1796. The Breguet company continues the tradition begun by Abraham-Louis to this day, initially in the hands of his immediate successors and now under the leadership of the Swatch Group.
