Lange&Söhne Glashütte age determination of quarter repeater pocket watches by movement number and year of manufacture
Share
It is striking that from 1926 to 1932 and from 1934 to 1940 only a few quarter repeater pocket watches were built (or sold ...) at Lange&Söhne in Glashütte
The explanation for this should be that the first period was marked by the global economic crisis and hyperinflation, and the second period by the preparations for World War II, i.e. political times in which no one demanded, bought or could afford such high-quality and valuable pocket watches.
During hyperinflation, it would have been technically impossible to sell a Lange & Söhne pocket watch. If a simple loaf of bread cost 5 billion Reichsmarks, how many trillions would a gold pocket watch worth a hundred thousand times more have cost, and what would Lange & Söhne have done with the worthless money three days later?
In the preparation and also the armament for the Second World War 1934 - 1940, the problem was not so much the lack of demand, but Lange & Söhne in Glashütte concentrated its capacities on the development and production of war-important military, pilot and ship watches.
