What model names reveal – and what they don't

• Radiomir: The name goes back to the historical military watch. However, a modern Radiomir is not automatically old: Civilian models have been offered since 1993.
• Luminor: The historical construction originated in a military environment; civilian Panerai Luminor models also entered the market starting in 1993.

Panerai Age Determination via letters on the case back

Panerai serial numbers are a complex code that reveals a great deal about the history and identity of your watch. The individual components are described in more detail below:

Series Identifier: The first letter of your Panerai serial number corresponds to the production year. This system began in 1998 with the letter "A" and has been updated annually. For example, "B" stands for 1999, "C" for 2000, and so on.

Using our table, you can quickly determine your watch’s birth year. Watches from 1997, shortly after Panerai’s acquisition by Richemont, are often referred to as the “Pre-A” series.

Case Number: Following the year identifier is a two-digit code with a sequence of numbers. Common letter combinations include BB, DB, PL, and PN, among others. While Panerai has not officially announced the meaning of these codes, they likely indicate case materials or production sites. For example, PN often appears on Ceramica or Carbotech models, while SW may stand for wood elements.

Case Type Number: This section begins with "OP" followed by four digits. The sequential numbering has evolved from approximately 6500 in Panerai's early years to over 7500 in recent productions. This number helps to identify specific case designs of different models and years.

Unique Identifier: The remaining digits serve as the watch's individual "fingerprint" within its production run. This number, combined with the millesimation (production limitation) on the case back, tells you exactly where your watch falls in that production year. For example, "S0511/1000" denotes the 511th watch produced out of a total of 1,000 in 2016.

Understanding these elements not only aids in authenticating your Panerai, but also reveals its unique place in the brand's rich horological heritage.

Keep in mind that some special editions, such as those made for trade fairs or as VIP gifts (known as "Shadow Cases"), may deviate from this standard format, which adds an extra layer of fascination for collectors.
