In fact, I own a watch that probably dates from 1999, and whose serial number begins with 99, although the table above suggests that the number should actually be 90. Perhaps different watches have different serial number patterns.

I also discovered a strange repetition in the numbering scheme: Dates from future decades match the numbers from the 1990s. For example, the following years could potentially have the same initial serial numbers:

1990 and 2000 (both start with 00),
1991 and 2010 (both start with 10),
1992 and 2020 (both possibly starting with 20).


Victorinox couldn't give me a precise answer about this repeating pattern, and frankly, this information is probably unavailable to the average customer service representative. I'll dismiss it as a mystery that could only be solved with the manufacturing records, but even then, that probably wouldn't prove anything.

Please use your common sense and the secondary dating methods I suggest. I hope this information will be helpful to collectors of Swiss Army watches in determining the age of their watch.
