Swiss manufacturer of luxury watches

"FP Journe" stands for Francois-Paul Journe, the master watchmaker behind the company. Journe is a member of the renowned AHCI watchmaking association.

François-Paul Journe was born in Marseille in 1957. As a rebellious child, he destroyed his toys to see what held them together at the core. "I always wanted to know how it worked," he said. At the age of 14, he was sent to a local watchmaking school. Pure chance, really. This was simply following the example of his uncle—just twelve years older than him—who had become a successful watchmaker and restorer.

In 1976, he graduated from the Paris School of Watchmaking, ranking top of his class. He earned his living restoring antique clocks and pocket watches in his uncle's Paris workshop, acquiring profound knowledge almost incidentally. As early as 1982, he built his first pocket watch with a tourbillon and constant-speed winding mechanism.

In 1985, he opened his workshop in Paris on the Rue de Verneuil. Over the years, he constructed highly complex, one-of-a-kind pieces there for passionate collectors, such as the Pendule Sympathique for the London firm John Asprey. That same year, he joined the AHCI watchmakers' association. From 1989 onwards, Sainte-Croix worked in the Swiss Jura region together with several other watchmakers.

He founded the company in 1999 in Geneva in a former turn-of-the-century factory building, right in the heart of the city. The brand's motto is Invenit et Fecit (Latin for Invent and Make), which is meant to express that the company manufactures its watches entirely in-house.

Many watch manufacturers use base calibers from companies like ETA SA or Unitas, which they then modify. FPJourne often designs entirely new movements , with completely new systems, such as the resonance chronometer, which houses two movements in a single case. Although the balance wheels of the two movements are mechanically separate, they oscillate synchronously.

Serial numbers – the most important dating feature

Every F. P. Journe watch bears: 1. a serial number (inside),
2. a case number (on the back or lug),
3. a two-digit coding :

Example: No. 123-02A

Meaning:

  • 123 → consecutive serial number of the model
  • 02 → Year of manufacture 2002
  • A → Material or series (e.g. A = Platinum, B = Gold)

This allows the age to be traced back to the exact year , as long as the engraving is in its original condition.

Scheme since 1999

Engraving example Interpretable as Production time
No. 15-99A 15th watch produced, 1999 (Platinum) First year, Tourbillon Souverain Souscription
No. 102-01A No. 102, built in 2001 Early Octa series

No. 1200-22C No. 1200, year of manufacture 2022 (housing code C = tantalum/metal variant)

⚠️ The last one or two letters at the end always indicate the material or special series (A = Platinum, B = Gold, C/T = Tantalum or Titanium, R = Ruthenium Edition etc.)
