German watch and chronometer maker
Franz (Friedrich) Happe was born on April 30 , 1879. In 1899 , he trained as a watchmaker in Trondheim, Norway. On June 1, 1902, he took over the watchmaking business from Johann Christoph Schnoor and renamed the company Franz Happe .
Like Johann Christoph Schnoor, he built marine chronometers and ship's clocks for the Imperial Navy. For his marine chronometers, he initially used English movements, later those from Glashütte . Several ship's clocks were fitted with high-quality movements from Gustav Becker .
These were primarily used in the First World War. Several watchmakers produced such watches exclusively for the German Navy. Clocks were manufactured by companies such as A. Schuchmann in Wilhelmshaven, owner Fritz Schuchmann , Fritz Tietz in Kiel, and Johannes Czapp in Danzig. Franz Happe married Ida Erna Helene Happe-Dampka. Their son, Werner Happe, was born from this marriage.
Franz Happe died on March 19 , 1919. Ida subsequently lived at Düsternbrooker Weg 64, and later at Falcksstraße 15. The business continued, however, and still has a presence in Kiel.
