In 1858, Maurice Ditisheim founded his own company in La Chaux-de-Fonds. In his workshop, he manufactured fine pocket watches, which he sold under his own name.
His watches were distinguished It was distinguished above all by its precision and quality. The workshop quickly grew into the Maurice Ditisheim Manufactory. In 1894, Gaspard Ditisheim offered Vulcain watches for the first time.
In 1900, Maurice Ditisheim registered Vulcain as a trademark for its watches. The company was renamed Ditisheim Frères and Ditisheim & Co. when Gaspard Ditisheim joined the company. In addition to the Vulcain brand, the Volts brand was also used.
Vulcain became particularly well known for its Cricket wristwatch alarm clock, which was released in 1947.
In 1961, the companies Revue, Vulcain , Buser and Phenix merged to form “ Manufactures d'Horlogerie Suisse Réunis SA ” (MSR).
During the so-called quartz crisis in the 1980s, the Vulcain name quietly disappeared from watch dials, and the market for high-quality mechanical wristwatches collapsed. The future seemed to belong to the inexpensive quartz watch. However, the Vulcain manufactory continued to produce its watches for its sister brands within the MSR group.
Even when the Cricket was produced again under the company name «Revue Thommen», this was done in the workshops of the Vulcain manufactory in La-Chaux-de-Fonds
Relaunch of the Vulcain brand within the MANUFACTURE DES MONTRES VULCAIN SA
At the end of the 1990s, the Vulcain manufactory was sold by MSR. Following bankruptcy in 2001, PMH (Production et Marketing Horologer) acquired all rights to the Vulcain brand and the legendary Cricket.
