He developed a pocket sundial. By pressing a button on the underside, a free-floating compass needle aligned itself, as the shadow stick (gnomon) must point north. This allowed the true local time to be read on the time scale of the dial. What was special: On a second, inner scale, daylight saving time could be read, which was reintroduced by the Allies in the summer of 1945.
