Offered here is a piece of Augsburg watchmaking history: a solid silver men's verge pocket watch signed "Lindenmeyer Augsburg" from approximately 1750
The significance of Augsburg in 18th-century watchmaking needs no explanation to collectors, as the best and most renowned German watchmakers of the 18th century came from Augsburg.
The case is signed "Lindenmeyer Augsburg", which clearly proves its origin from Augsburg. We could not find a watchmaker named Lindenmeyer from Augsburg, so we assume this refers to an early case maker.
Case diameter: 52mm, case silver (unpunched, acid-tested), white enamel dial with a highly interesting depiction of the "V" which I have never seen before in 30 years of watch collecting.
Inside is a sparkling clean, unsigned verge movement. We date its construction to around 1750 based on:
- the richly pierced and engraved balance cock/balance bridge motif
- the gilded movement plates
- the finely engraved decoration
- the regulator
- the classic and robust construction of a verge escapement
This super rare artifact of German watchmaking history starts and runs (accuracy not tested).
Condition, considering its age (approx. 280 years...) 2: complete dial with full numerals and only a few small minor nicks/cracks, little wear / clearly visible engravings, sparkling clean verge movement, hardly noticeable signs of wear on the case.
