Ebel (watch brand)

Ebel is a traditional Swiss watch brand that now produces products in the mid-price segment and once in the highest price segment of the top-class watch market.
Founding history
The brand name is a combination of the names of the married couple and entrepreneurs Eugène Blum and Alice Lévy (Eugène Blum et Lévy), who founded the company on July 15, 1911, in La Chaux-de-Fonds . [ 1 ] Ebel is one of the nine watch companies owned by Jewish families in La Chaux-de-Fonds between 1890 and 1914. [ 2 ] [ 3 ]
Eugène Blum was responsible for the technical side of brand development and Alice Levy was responsible for the aesthetic aspects.
The award certificate for a patented ring watch from 1914 shows the social restrictions and lack of recognition for women at that time: The award was issued to «Messieurs Blum & Cie, Fabrique Ebel La Chaux-de-Fonds» (Messieurs Blum & Co.).
Disclosure
In 1929, Charles, Blum and Levy's son, took over the company. He expanded the company's distribution network by expanding abroad, including into the United States. Under the leadership of Blum's grandson, Pierre-Alain, the company experienced significant growth after the early 1970s, producing wristwatches for Cartier .
In the 1980s, the “Line 1911”, named after the year of its founding, was a great success.
The traditional brand was acquired in the autumn of 1999 by the French luxury goods group LVMH and then in 2004 by the US group Movado (which had also started as a Jewish company in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1881 ) was adopted.
