Guinand
Brief overview
After Helmut Sinn had sold his company Sinn Spezialuhren GmbH & Co. KG , he took over the majority shareholding in “Guinand Watch Co SA” in 1996 and pursued the brands Chronosport , Guinand and the pocket watch brand Jubilar once again present his vision of a watch that should be “clearly legible, high quality and yet affordable”.
Company history
The history of the Guinand company stretches back a long way, to 1865. At that time, the brothers Julien-Alcide and Charles Leon Guinand founded the Guinand Freres company in Les Brenets, which specialized in the manufacture and sale of watches. The watches were sold primarily to Germany, Scandinavia, and America. The company quickly began to flourish. At the end of the 1870s, the American market collapsed as a result of an economic crisis.
As a way out of the crisis, Leon Guinand , a brilliant watchmaker, developed his own chronograph . Delivery began in 1881. This decision to specialize in chronographs and offer a technically exceptional product set the tone for the company's entire subsequent history.
Building on the chronograph, other complications were soon added, such as a chronograph with a minute counter, a “Chronograph-rattrapante” and “Compteurs-rattrapante”, i.e. chronographs and stopwatches with a split-second hand .
By the turn of the century, production already included a complete series of complicated watches. Around 1900, Leon Guinand made a name for himself in the professional world with the development of a new tachymeter chronograph.
As early as 1910 , the company began converting production from pocket chronographs to wrist chronographs . Gradually, a range of complicated wrist chronographs was also developed. Furthermore, products for specialized applications continued to be developed, such as the "de compteur à retour" model, a stopwatch with a zero reset in flight, and a new "compteur-rattrapante" (slow-resetting stopwatch).
In 1945 , Georges-Henrie Guinand , the son of the company's founder, Leon Guinand, converted the company into a public limited company. Since then, the company has been called Guinand Watch Co. SA
During the heyday of mechanical watches, the name Guinand became synonymous with the rattrapante chronograph. The list of customers from this era includes over 200 different brands, ranging from "A" for Ancora to "Z" for Zenith . Thanks to its specialization in complicated chronographs , the company even survived the major brand decline that hit Switzerland in the late 1970s due to the quartz crisis .
