Rare, very early (c. 1883) pocket watch by Julius Assmann Glashütte in an even rarer original Urofa second case in a facsimile original case
Collectors need not be told that pocket watches from the Julius Assmann manufactory, although less well known than Lange&Söhne, are much, much rarer than those by Lange and thus command significantly higher prices
It is a rare, but interestingly original Glashütte combination: original Assmann movement and dial in an also original Urofa Glashütte second case
Obviously, the original gold case was melted down during or shortly after World War I, but the movement remained in Glashütte. There, it was later (after 1926, as Urofa did not exist in Glashütte before then) fitted into an original Urofa case, a well-known Glashütte watch manufactory from 1926, and put back into use
Very rare combination of two absolute Glashütte traditional manufactories and not just "an Assmann movement in a foreign case". Interestingly, the original Assmann movement number was also stamped into the new Urofa case, which proves that the new fitting actually also took place at Urofa in Glashütte
Description:
Case diameter: 48.5mm, weight 91g, solid silver case, Roman numerals, indirect seconds
Later Glashütte second case by the Urofa Glashütte brand, Urofa number 13907 plus Assmann number 9111, matching the movement number
Early Assmann precision movement without fine adjustment yet, c. 1883, signed enamel dial, delicate steel hands, running, in a later (newer and thus not original) facsimile Assmann box
It is assumed that the gold case of the watch was melted down during World War I or the post-war years and that this case was used in Glashütte as a replacement case

The magnificent piece of watch history is running and going (accuracy not tested)

EZ: 2 normal, visible signs of age and wear, dial unrestored and well preserved, high-precision early Assmann movement clean, all covers close tightly and flush, the magnificent artifact is running and going

History of one of the best German watch manufactories "Julius Asmann" in Glashütte:

Assmann, Julius

Glashütte watchmaker

Assmann was born on October 2 1827 in Stettin and learned the watchmaking craft there. He acquired further knowledge with Berlin chronometer makers where he mainly engaged in new work.

In the year 1850, after various travels, he also came to Glashütte i. SA, where he worked at the A. Lange, Dresden company.

In 1852, on the advice of F. A. Lange, he opened his own watch manufactory J. Assmann/Glashütte i.SA, Deutsche Anker-Uhren-Fabrik, which in a relatively short time acquired a good 'reputation through the excellence of the manufactory.

Assmann's endeavor to make the watches more and more perfect and to bring them to a high level of perfection has contributed significantly to the elevation of the Glashütte watch industry. He belonged, until his death, to the supervisory board of the German watchmaking school.

Assmann married on July 31 1853 the sister of Adolf Schneider. From this marriage with Emilie Auguste Schneider comes his son Paul Assmann.

After the death of his first wife, he married in 1865 the daughter Marie of F. A. Lange and thus became his son-in-law.

Julius Assmann died on August 15 1886 in Glashütte
