Monopol Dürrstein magnificent steel luxury men's watch Glashütte in highest quality with swan neck fine adjustment
Johannes Dürrstein was the largest watch wholesaler/specialist in the watch Mecca of Glashütte from 1870. Soon after his founding, he became the exclusive seller/supplier of Germany's largest and best watch manufacturer, Lange & Söhne.
From 1890 onwards, Dürrstein produced its own high-quality watches of Glashütte design and quality, and the rare artifact of this offer dates from this era.
Dürrstein's logo and trademark was the "D" in a star, as it is clearly embossed in the case of our watch
Case diameter: 50mm, steel case but not yet stainless steel, three-faced watch with inner movement protection cover. A magnificent porcelain dial with blue Roman numerals and a surrounding Arabic railway minute track, beautifully delicate, presumably solid gold hands, total weight 94g.
The highly refined and early gold-plated three-quarter plate movement according to Glashütte design has a Swiss patent stamp and features the high-quality complication of a swan-neck fine adjustment, which is otherwise only found in top watches from Lange & Söhne or Julius Assmann
Watch starts and runs continuously (accuracy not tested)
EZ: 2 - normal, slight signs of age and use, especially slight corrosion on the case, the beautiful porcelain dial has a flaw between the "10" and the "11" that is not noticeable with the naked eye at first glance

Johannes Dürrstein (1845–1901)

Johannes Dürrstein (* 22 August 1845 in Niederrad ; † 7 May 1901 ) was a German entrepreneur and founder of the watch factory “Union” in Glashütte .

Dürrstein grew up in a middle-class family and completed a commercial apprenticeship with the Frankfurt watch wholesaler Ludwig & Fries. He traveled to Switzerland repeatedly for business and became acquainted with the country's leading watch manufacturers. [1]

Watch wholesaler Dürrstein & Co.

On January 19, 1874, Dürrstein founded the watch wholesaler Dürrstein & Co. in Dresden and built a trading network in the German Empire , Austria-Hungary , Bohemia , and Switzerland . He recognized that there was a large market for an inexpensive, everyday watch for everyone. After some time, Dürrstein was selling up to 50,000 pocket watches annually, which he sourced from Swiss suppliers.

As early as 1874, Dürrstein negotiated a contract with Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashütte for the exclusive distribution of Lange watches. However, the precision watches did not sell as well as expected, as the quality also led to high prices. Dürrstein persuaded A. Lange & Söhne to produce a simpler and cheaper version of the pocket watches, the so-called DUF quality [3] [4] , which subsequently sold well. [1] After 1880, Dürrstein introduced the Union brand, which he had produced in Switzerland. The trademark of these Union pocket watches was a bell with 5 stars on the case and movement; the dials were unsigned. [4] In 1885, his brother Friedrich Dürrstein became a partner in the company. [1]

Pocket watch manufacturer Glashütte Watch Factory “Union”

Dürrstein's desire for more and comparatively inexpensive Glashütte pocket watches led to the establishment of his own watch factory in Glashütte, the center of German precision watchmaking at the time. On January 1, 1893, he founded the Uhrenfabrik Union, Glashütte iS , relocated the majority of production from Switzerland to Glashütte, and began industrial and technologically more modern template watch production. The watches featured a Greek temple as the case mark, and the dial bore the inscription "Uhrenfabrik Union Glashütte." The technical director was the Glashütte watchmaker Julius Bergter (1856–1944). [4] In the first year, Dürrstein was able to announce the production of a Grande Complication . After six years, the new watch factory building was opened on May 1, 1899, where the production of pocket watches began with around 40 employees. Simple precision pocket watches and chronographs were produced, as were watches with complications , such as pocket chronometers and tourbillons . Later, observation and ship's clocks were added. [1] [5] [6]

Dürrstein died on May 7, 1901 after a long illness.

His brother Friedrich Dürrstein became the sole owner of both companies, but died in 1903. His widow, Lina Helene Dürrstein, continued the successful business. The observation watches and marine chronometers of the Glashütte watch factory "Union" received numerous awards from the German Maritime Observatory .

Due to the First World War , the subsequent economically weak 1920s, and the advent of wristwatches , the companies found themselves in financial difficulties. With the onset of the Great Depression, the Glashütte watch factory "Union" disappeared in 1926 [4] , and some time later, the wholesale company Dürrstein & Co.
