Subject of the offer:

Facsimile Junghans replica of the world's first pocket watch by Peter Henlein from 1590, the famous "Nuremberg Egg" on display at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg, with original Junghans movement

Original size, original dial, original engravings on the dial as on the base: "PetrusHele me f. Norimb. 1590"

There are two different versions of these replicas on the collectors market, one with a mechanical movement and one with a Junghans quartz movement. The model in this offer is the Junghans quartz movement.

Description of the article:

A magnificent and unique piece of German and watch history: the "Nürnger Ei" by master watchmaker Peter Henlein

Built in 1590, this example is the first handy pocket watch in the world and can of course only be admired in a museum

In 1971, the Diehl company, also based in Nuremberg, had a facsimile reproduction produced in a small number of copies, faithful to every detail, with the permission of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum.

This facsimile watch has a quartz movement, which of course has nothing in common with the original, history-changing masterpiece, which filled the entire case

Like the original by master Peter Henlein, the facsimile has no second display but only a 24-hour display

Dial diameter: 50mm, case height: 45mm, the facsimile case is not cast like the original but elaborately turned from brass

High-quality, rare collector's item in original facsimile quality with preserved patina and engravings. Watch starts and runs continuously (battery recently replaced, accuracy not tested).

EZ: 2 - normal, age-related signs of wear and storage, tarnished

Peter Henlein and the "Nuremberg Egg" (Source: Wikipedia):

Pocket watches with a spring mechanism and an oval shape were formerly called Nuremberg eggs. In the late and late Middle Ages, Nuremberg was home to the world's finest craftsmen and fine metalworkers.

Origin of the name

The name "Ei" (egg) probably does not come from the shape of the clocks, but is probably a corruption of "Aeurlein" (little clock). They have often been attributed (even in fiction) to the Nuremberg precision mechanic Peter Henlein , as he made the first wearable clocks around 1510. However, there are doubts as to whether he is the originator of the Nuremberg eggs, as the first dates date from around 1550, after his death (1542). Peter Henlein built clocks in the form of tall cylindrical boxes and small spheres in the shape of pomanders . The well-known egg-shaped clocks date from the second half of the 16th century and cannot be associated with Peter Henlein.

Gait regulation with torsion pendulum

The portable clock only became possible with the invention of the mainspring before 1430. This made it possible to reduce the size of large, weight-driven clocks, allowing them to be placed on a table, for example. The exact date of this further reduction in size is disputed. There are reports from late 15th-century Italy that suggest portable clocks. What is certain is that, starting with Peter Henlein, they could be housed in a case only the size of a hand. The invention of the mainspring and the torsion pendulum as a timekeeper has often been attributed to Peter Henlein , but such timekeepers were already in use in the early 15th century. However, Henlein was the one who brought about miniaturization.

The regularity of the oscillation determines the accuracy of the clock. However, because the deflection of the torsion pendulum is influenced by every movement of the wearer, the clock's rate was quite irregular. It was not until Christiaan Huygens patented the escapement with a balance wheel and hairspring in 1657 that the daily rate of the clock was improved to about 10 seconds.
