The “Rüter Clock” from 1945
Necessity is the mother of invention: In May 1945, wristwatches were scarce in Germany. Production was stagnating, and raw materials and skilled workers were lacking.
Berlin physicist and chemist Robert Rüter offered a solution. He developed a pocket-sized sundial. It had a plastic casing, the top of which was molded from the then-modern Plexiglas. Mass production was easy. At the push of a button on the bottom, a freely floating compass needle aligned itself, because the sundial (pointer) had to point north.
This allowed the true local time to be read on the dial's time scale. What's special about it: A second, inner scale displayed daylight saving time, which was reintroduced by the Allies in the summer of 1945. A Rüter clock can be seen in the Furtwangen special exhibition.
Buying a Rüter clock: Rüter clocks are also offered on online sales platforms like eBay. Prices vary widely between approximately €150 and €250. Please note: The original cardboard box and the 10-page instruction manual complete the purchase of a portable Rüter sundial.
