The original packaging and the original manufacturer's manual are included (see photos). The very rare version of the packaging with the manual on the back has been slightly repaired with Tesa tape and has visible signs of age.

If you consider that this most famous of all sundials was only produced 8000 times almost 70 years ago, you can appreciate how rare it is to find a complete piece in the full set anywhere.

The function of the most famous of all sundials was registered as a patent by the inventor Dr. Rudolf Rüter

As a rarity and piece of watch history, it is exhibited in many collections and museums and also in the Berlin Planetarium.

The special feature of the Rüter clock is/was that it has a compass and thus could always be aligned north and shows the precise time in all places in Europe

To read the time, the sundial pocket watch is held horizontally toward the sun, then the brass button on the underside is pressed, which automatically adjusts the dial to a north-south orientation. Once the dial has settled, the time can be read by the shadow cast by the hand.

Diameter approx. 5.3 cm

The Rüter clock is in good condition, dial is immaculate, otherwise there are few visible signs of age or use as shown in the photos, the printed original box shows the clear signs of age or use as shown in the photos

EZ: 2 - Plastic dome glass and case relatively well preserved, dial very good, original packaging with cracks visible on the photos, which have been glued with Tesa tape in the meantime

History of the Dr. Rüter sundial (source: Südkurier online):

The “Rüter Clock” from 1945

Necessity is the mother of invention: In May 1945, wristwatches were scarce in Germany. Production was stagnating, and raw materials and skilled workers were lacking.

Berlin physicist and chemist Robert Rüter offered a solution. He developed a pocket-sized sundial. It had a plastic casing, the top of which was molded from the then-modern Plexiglas. Mass production was easy. At the push of a button on the bottom, a freely floating compass needle aligned itself, because the sundial (pointer) had to point north.

This allowed the true local time to be read on the dial's time scale. What's special about it: A second, inner scale displayed daylight saving time, which was reintroduced by the Allies in the summer of 1945. A Rüter clock can be seen in the Furtwangen special exhibition.

Buying a Rüter clock: Rüter clocks are also offered on online sales platforms like eBay. Prices vary widely between approximately €150 and €250. Please note: The original cardboard box and the 10-page instruction manual complete the purchase of a portable Rüter sundial.
