Grillo is the daughter of businessman Herbert Grillo and his wife Marita, née Withofer. As a dressage rider, Gabriela Grillo trained with Otto Fuhrmann from 1960 to 1966, with Walter Günther from 1967 to 1973, and from 1974 with Major General (ret.) Albert Stecken.[5] After graduating from the Frau-Rath-Goethe-Gymnasium in Duisburg in 1971, Grillo enrolled in musicology, German studies, and theater studies at the University of Cologne in the same year.[6] Grillo was the youth representative for the Reit- und Fahrverein am Uhlenhorst in Mülheim from 1979 to 1983. From 1980, she was a permanent contributor to the specialist magazine Reiten und Fahren. In 1981, she became a board member of the Dressage specialist group in the German Equestrian and Driving Association (DRFV). From 1976 to 1982, she was a member of the West German dressage national team.[6] During this time, she achieved her greatest sporting success, winning the team gold medal in dressage at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal; in the individual competition, she placed 4th.[7] She achieved both successes on her Trakehner Ultimo. From 1985, she was a member of the German Olympic Committee for Equestrianism (DOKR). Grillo wrote specialist articles and several books on riding, such as 60 Worte Reiterdeutsch in 1979.
For winning the gold medal in 1976, she received the Silver Laurel Leaf.
Since 1993, Gabriela Grillo, a great-great-granddaughter of Wilhelm Grillo and great-grandniece of Friedrich Grillo, was the managing partner of Wilhelm Grillo Handelsgesellschaft mbH, trading in zinc, lead, copper and rare metals such as bismuth, antimony and cobalt.
In March 1995, she became a member of the Supervisory Board at Grillo-Werke AG in Duisburg and then, in May 1995, was delegated by the Supervisory Board of Grillo-Werke AG to the Executive Board as a deputy board member. In May 1996, she was appointed a full member of the Executive Board of Grillo-Werke AG. From August 2001, she was the spokesperson for the Executive Board; from October 2004, she was the chairwoman of the Supervisory Board of Grillo-Werke AG.[6][13] Her successor on the board was her cousin Ulrich Grillo. The Grillo Group is divided into four business segments: metal, chemicals, zinc oxide, and Rheinzink, with subsidiaries and branches across Europe and footholds in the USA, China, and South Africa. The Grillo Group is considered the largest zinc processor in the world[14] and has been entirely family-owned again since 1994; the 150 family shareholders may only transfer their restricted registered shares with the approval of the Executive Board and Supervisory Board. Grillo was on the executive board of the London Metal Exchange (LME).
Gabriela Grillo was a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Duisburg-Essen.
In November 2010, Grillo received the Luther Rose for social responsibility and entrepreneurial courage from the International Martin Luther Foundation in Gladbeck.
