Subject of the auction:

This almost unique, museum-worthy, and gigantic coachman's clock by Stauffer & Son, bearing the Stauffer brand name "Atlas," is the previous owner's description. The term "coachman's clock" is not defined in the literature; it could (and probably is) a railwayman's clock.

Railway clock is more likely, since the extreme shortening of the hour hand together with the gigantic large indirect second directs the view freely and easily reads minutes and seconds

As is well known, even in the 19th century, the general time was less important in the railway system than the minutes and seconds at departure

Everything about this antique 19th-century coachman's clock is unique!

It starts with the gigantic size of 70mm for a pocket watch, with the movement—presumably designed specifically for this type of watch—completely filling the gigantic case. Often, for whatever purpose, "enlarged" watches simply incorporated standard or ébauche movements into larger cases, and the cases were provided with a corresponding surrounding "frame" to ensure the significantly smaller movements were securely in place.

The absolutely unusual dial can rightly be described as unique:

On the one hand, the size of 70mm, on the other hand, Arabic and Roman numerals were used simultaneously:
inside a Roman 12-hour circle, above it a slightly larger, but with the same railway scale, a 24-hour circle with Arabic numerals, outside a 60-minute railway scale

The gigantic indirect second hand, which takes up almost half of the dial, also catches the eye

Last but not least, the extremely shortened hour hand, which keeps the minute hand clear, catches the eye and can also be described as almost unique. The minute hand is unusually wide and powerful, which in turn allows for better legibility, even at night or when rocking.

In any case, someone probably over 180 years ago put a lot of thought into the concept and construction of this unique piece of watch history – an entire movement obviously had to be specially designed. Every detail is well thought out and aims at easy handling, a secure hold, even when the operator "rocks", and easy readability of seconds and minutes.

In 35 years of collecting exceptional and military watches, I have never seen anything comparable, not even in literature or on pictures

Case diameter: a gigantic 70mm. A sparkling clean, early gold-plated, highly precise, and robust movement with a patent, likely designed specifically for the transportation industry.

Whether the movement originates from IWC cannot be determined, but it is known that most of the early watches from Stauffer & Son had IWC Ebauche movements installed.

The museum artifact starts and runs (accuracy not tested)

We are grateful to any expert for information about this type of coachman clock, railway clock or coachman clocks from Stauffer & Son in general

EZ: 1 -2 - considering its age, in excellent condition, hardly any signs of age or wear, movement spotless, lid closes tightly and flush, dial unrestored good

Swiss watch manufacturing and English import company

The company Stauffer, Fils & Cie. was founded around 1830 by Robert Stauffer . The company was originally located in La Chaux-de-Fonds at 29 Rue de la Paix. Stauffer, Son & Co. was founded in 1857 by Jules Stauffer and Francis Claude , the son of the company founder. The company was based in England at 12 Old Jewry Chambers, London. The company was originally called Stauffer & Co. and imported Swiss watches. The office in La Chaux-de-Fonds was located at 52 Avenue Léopold Robert. The company's aim was to import Swiss-made watches to London. After Jules Stauffer's death in 1884, a partnership was formed between Francis Claude Francis and Charles Nicolet-Sandoz (1856-1944) , a Swiss who had already come to London in the 1870s after attending the La Chaux-de-Fonds watchmaking school for three years. Charles Nicolet took over the management of the company in London and La Chaux-de-Fonds after Francis Claude had retired. The company was renamed Nicolet fils & Cie. Around 1920, the company was also listed as Atlas Watch Co. The name Stauffer, Son & Co. or Stauffer, Fils & Cie. was retained, however. The company used Ébauches from IWC for some series of watches.

Stauffer is a watch manufacturer that has probably been forgotten these days

It
's not easy to come by information about the history of this manufactory. My thanks go to the dedicated chronograph collector Hans Weil (Berlin), whose research provided the basis for my information here:

The Stauffer watchmaking family's roots apparently date back to 1788, when a certain ABRAM STAUFFER from Eggiwil (a small town in the Emmental Valley, in the canton of Bern) visited the Frankfurt Trade Fair. From 1797 onward, he also represented Stauffer & Sandoz - La Chaux de Fonds at the Leipzig Trade Fair. Other sources place the year 1830 as the year in which the company STAUFFER FILS & Co. was founded. A branch office was established in London in 1859. Charles Nicolet (allegedly 1856-1944) played an important role in this, allegedly taking over the company in 1874. IWC watches were also sold.

Very few Stauffer stopwatches are found in Germany. They were probably mostly sold to America or Great Britain.
