Subject of the offer
Super rare original Doxa military pocket watch German Southwest Africa, probably from the Herero War/Uprising
Not only in World War I did well-known watch manufacturers - especially Doxa - offer pocket watches with special military motifs for soldiers for private purchase.
Special military motifs were usually designed and applied to the case back - e.g. of the air force, the artillery, the infantry or the navy - to invite their members to privately purchase these "non-military military watches".
However, these quasi "souvenir watches" were actually used at the front and were worn and used by their owners in combat, as there were no real "military watches" other than the onboard clocks for biplanes and zeppelins, let alone those - such as the "Heer Dienstuhr" (Army Service Watch), which was produced and issued in its millions, or the "Junghans 29A Marine Stopwatch" in World War II - which were issued to the fighting troops as equipment.
It is clearly a model for the imperial protection force in the German colonies of "German South West Africa" and "German East Africa", presumably from South West Africa, today's Namibia, where most of the German protection force riders were stationed and assembled during the Herero uprising and the "Battle of Waterberg".
Without a doubt recognizable by the military oak leaf engravings on the front, the Schutztruppen uniform with pith helmet in the battle scene as well as the clearly recognizable camel in the scene
Yes, the German Schutztruppe actually rode camels in South West Africa and not horses, for which there was no water on long journeys
Those who survived the murderous heat and fighting proudly wore their "Southwest Africa Schutztruppenuhr" as veterans for decades.
