English watchmaking in Liverpool
M.I. Tobias & Co. was founded in 1810 by Meyer Isaac Tobias (also called Michael) in Liverpool and existed until 1829. Previously, Meyer Isaac was a business partner of Morris Tobias in the firm M. Tobias & Co. London and Liverpool. Morris Tobias was Meyer Isaac's uncle. In Liverpool, the company was registered at Poole Lane No. 5. There are also watches Signed by Lord Streert. The watch shown is a Swiss movement and is likely a Swiss forgery intended for export. The engraving is also incorrectly MJ Tobias instead of MI Tobias. Genuine watches by Meyer Isaac Tobias are based on the English design, often with an escapement invented by Edward-John Massey . He exported many watches to America and died in New York in 1838.
