Subject of the offer:

Highly refined, fine, "Union Glocke" / Dürrstein & Co genuine Glashütte precision pocket watch, three-lid Savonette, solid 0.800 silver, from the house of "Lange & Söhne" exclusive sales genius Johannes Dürrstein

The brand "Union Glocke Glashütte" produced by Dürrstein & Co without the involvement of Lange & Söhne in Switzerland corresponds in idea and quality to the DUF series from Lange & Söhne and thus represents a genuine Glashütte watch with a three-quarter plate movement

Attention: Johannes Dürrstein, who was not a watchmaker but a watch wholesaler, first sold used pocket watches, then Swiss pocket watches with Glashütte elements already under the name "Union"

Only when it was established by law at the end of the 19th century that only watches that were actually manufactured in Glashütte could be called "Glashütte watches", Johannes Dürrstein founded his own watch manufactory in Glashütte and had Glashütte pocket watches with three-quarter plates produced there from 1893 to 1933, such as the rare model of this offer.

"Genuine" Glashütter Union pocket watches from Dürrstein can be recognized by the new brand logo from 1893 - a Greek temple with 3 columns - Dürrstein pocket watches "Glashütter Bauart" from Switzerland, on the other hand, were hallmarked with a bell as the brand logo

Watch wholesaler

  •

This watch wholesaler was founded by Johannes Dürrstein and Friedrich Dürrstein in 1874 in Dresden and had its headquarters at Waisenhausstraße 27 (

The company " Dürrstein & Comp. Dresden " secured exclusive distribution of A. Lange & Söhne for the German Empire. However, the market for Lange watches was limited due to their high price, and so the growing demand for high-quality pocket watches below this price range during the "Gründerzeit" (Wilhelminian period) was increasingly met by Swiss imports. Julius Bergter , who worked as a watchmaker at the Moritz Großmann watch factory and as a teacher at the German Watchmaking School in Glashütte , joined Dürrstein & Comp. in Dresden in 1882 and soon became a close technical advisor. Many of his developments were patented for Dürrstein & Comp.

In order to remain competitive, after the death of Adolf Lange, the Dürrstein company urged his successors to offer them a more affordable pocket watch for this developing market. In 1878 The time had come for this project to be implemented. Starting with serial number 20001, the first A. Lange & Söhne developed and manufactured pocket watches in a low price range onto the market. These are still high-quality pillar movements with the signature "Deutsche Uhrenfabrikation Glashütte". The fact that these watches initially had no indication of the manufacturing company on the dial or on the movement suggests that this production line did not necessarily correspond to the previous company philosophy of the Lange brothers. Dürrstein also sold pocket watches under the brands " Felsenburg ", " Monopol ", " Columbus ", " Tavannes ", and " Zenith ", among others. Julius Bergter, who worked as a watchmaker in the Moritz Großmann watch factory and as a teacher at the German Watchmaking School in Glashütte, became an employee and soon a close technical advisor at Dürrstein & Comp. in Dresden. Many of his developments were patented for Dürrstein & Comp.

Bell Union

Since even the cheaper version of a Lange watch, which later became known under the signature DUF, still seemed too expensive for the Dürrstein company to allow for further expansion, and the Lange company was obviously not prepared to make any further concessions regarding a further reduction in quality, the Dürrstein company had watches manufactured under its own brand "Union" in 1890 for the market segment they considered to be promising.
These were marked on the movements and often also on the cases by a bell with 5 stars ( Glocken-Union ). The dials are unsigned.
The watches are of Swiss origin and not Glashütte. If you find the inscription "Glashütte" anywhere on a Glocken-Union watch, it is definitely a fake.

Union Glashütte

On January 1, 1893, Johannes Dürrstein founded the Union watch factory in Glashütte, parallel to his Dresden watch wholesale business. The company was located at Hauptstrasse 41 from 1899 onwards. Julius Bergter served as its director. That same year, Dürrstein presented and sold a Grande Complication at the World's Fair in Chicago. The Grande Complication shown in Chicago in 1895 was presented in a modified form as an anniversary watch to mark the 50th anniversary of the Glashütte watch industry. It was the first Grande Complication to be built in Glashütte and featured the functions of a chronograph rattrapante with jumping second, 30-minute counter, perpetual calendar, flashing second, moon phase, minute repeater, grande and petite sonnerie. A total of six watches were subsequently produced. Until 1925, the company manufactured genuine, fully-fledged Glashütte watches, equivalent in quality to Lange and Assmann watches. The logo on the cases of the Glashütte watch factory Union, dating back to 1894 , depicts a Greek temple with three columns. Swiss-made watches of the "Glocken-Union" brand were offered alongside Union Glashütte watches for quite some time. The "Union Glashütte" brand was revived in 1996 and is now part of the Swatch Group . In addition to Union Glashütte pocket watches, there were also Glashütte pocket watches of the Reform D + C Glashütte brand. Only a few examples of these watches are known.

Glashütte pocket watch with jumping digital hour and minute display

Inspired by IWC's jumping-digit watches based on Joseph Pallweber's patent, Dürrstein & Co. patented its own mechanism for the jumping time display (DRP 35996). Unlike Pallweber, a second mainspring barrel provided the power for driving the dials. A very small number of watches of a very similar design based on this patent are also available from Lange & Söhne. These have fetched high five-figure sums at auction. The hammer and mallet symbol on this watch indicates an owner in a high position in the mining industry.

Company closure

After the death of his brother, Friedrich Dürrstein, his wife Lina and their sons continued to run the company Dürrstein & Comp., Dresden. Watchmaker Emil Leutert (1884–1973) was hired as a regulator. He worked as plant manager until production ceased in 1925 or 1926 , then repaired Union watches as a freelancer. The Glashütte factory was closed in 1933 and deleted from the commercial register in 1936. At that time, trademarks were not used independently of the manufacturer, as they are today.

Johannes Dürrstein (1845–1901)

Johannes Dürrstein (* 22 August 1845 in Niederrad ; † 7 May 1901 ) [1] was a German entrepreneur and founder of the watch factory "Union" in Glashütte . [2]

Dürrstein grew up in a middle-class family and completed a commercial apprenticeship with the Frankfurt watch wholesaler Ludwig & Fries. He traveled to Switzerland repeatedly for business and became acquainted with the country's leading watch manufacturers. [1]

Watch wholesaler Dürrstein & Co.

On January 19, 1874, Dürrstein founded the watch wholesaler Dürrstein & Co. in Dresden and built a trading network in the German Empire , Austria-Hungary , Bohemia , and Switzerland . He recognized that there was a large market for an inexpensive, everyday watch for everyone. After some time, Dürrstein was selling up to 50,000 pocket watches annually, which he sourced from suppliers in Switzerland. [1]

As early as 1874, Dürrstein negotiated a contract with Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashütte for the exclusive distribution of Lange watches. However, the precision watches did not sell as well as expected, as the quality also led to high prices. Dürrstein persuaded A. Lange & Söhne to produce a simpler and cheaper version of the pocket watches, the so-called DUF quality [3] [4] , which subsequently sold well. [1] After 1880, Dürrstein introduced the Union brand, which he had produced in Switzerland. The trademark of these Union pocket watches was a bell with 5 stars on the case and movement; the dials were unsigned. [4] In 1885, his brother Friedrich Dürrstein became a partner in the company. [1]

Dürrstein's desire for more and comparatively inexpensive Glashütte pocket watches led to the establishment of his own watch factory in Glashütte, then the center of German precision watchmaking. On January 1, 1893, he founded the Uhrenfabrik Union, Glashütte iS , relocated the majority of production from Switzerland to Glashütte, and began industrial and technologically more modern template watch production. The watches featured a Greek temple as the case mark, and the dial bore the inscription "Uhrenfabrik Union Glashütte." The technical director was Glashütte watchmaker Julius Bergter (1856–1944). In the very first year, Dürrstein was able to announce the production of a Grande Complication . After six years, the new watch factory building was opened on May 1, 1899, where around 40 employees began producing pocket watches. Simple precision pocket watches and chronographs were produced, as were watches with complications , such as pocket chronometers and tourbillons . Later, observation and ship's clocks were added. [1] [5] [6]

Dürrstein died on May 7, 1901 after a long illness.

His brother Friedrich Dürrstein became the sole owner of both companies, but died in 1903. His widow, Lina Helene Dürrstein, continued the business successfully. The observation watches and marine chronometers of the Glashütte watch factory "Union" received multiple awards from the German Maritime Observatory . [1]

Due to the First World War , the subsequent economically weak 1920s, and the advent of wristwatches , the companies found themselves in financial difficulties. With the onset of the Great Depression, the Glashütte watch factory "Union" disappeared in 1926 [4] , and some time later, the wholesale company Dürrstein & Co.
